Project Description

Project: The project involved a one-lane vehicular bridge that now crosses the Torola river in the municipality of Cacaopera. The aim of the project was to end the isolation of the northern part of the Department of Morazán, which is located in eastern El Salvador. This area is one of the most depressed in the country, and its isolation has marginalized the population in social, political, cultural and general development terms. The bridge was designed and built by CIVING, S.A. and the designer is the civil engineer Guillermo Candela García.

Structural type: post-tensioned concrete arch of the multispan bowstring type, with spans measuring 11+35+11 metres, compliant with AASHTO standard 2004.

Budget: €300,000

Time frame: 6 months

Impact: The bridge improves the lives of schoolchildren, who no longer have to wet their clothing, books, pens, etc., as they wade across the river, nor are they forced to risk their lives when the water level is high, nor must they miss days of classes because they cannot access the ford.

It also helps the farmers both when harvesting their crops and travelling to the city to seek medical help or transport the sick and injured.
